Why Prices Differ Between Regions

  • Distance from farms: products are usually cheaper close to where they are grown. In this report, bananas are cheapest in Mindanao, and potatoes are cheapest in the Cordillera.

  • Transport and handling: goods moved between islands or over long distances carry extra freight costs and losses from spoilage.

  • Metro Manila demand: Metro Manila has the highest average for many products in this report, including pork liempo, beef, galunggong, ampalaya and eggplant.

  • Weather and season: typhoons and the rainy season can disrupt harvests and transport, so prices can change from month to month.

  • Imports: products such as rice, garlic and onions are partly imported, so their prices also depend on import supply.
